Moerwijk is a place to live rather than a base for sightseeing, and hotel beds inside it are scarce. The appeal for a visitor is practical, from quiet residential streets to its own train station and a short rail hop to Den Haag Hollands Spoor and the centre of The Hague. Anyone who wants sights and restaurants at the door is better off in central The Hague, or out at the seaside district of Scheveningen.
Stay here for calm, not nightlife. Rijswijk, just across the boundary, offers much the same kind of residential lodging.

Moerwijk's landmarks are mostly its churches, the parish buildings that rose as the neighborhood filled. The Shalomkerk and the Emmauskerk stand among a dense group of twentieth-century houses of worship across these streets. A memorial breaks the pattern.
The Khojaly Massacre Memorial recalls a distant atrocity, one of several marked sites scattered through the district. Across the boundary in Rijswijk stand older monuments, among them the Oude Kerk and the town museum at Ottoburch, while the Haags Openbaar Vervoer Museum keeps the city's tram history within easy reach.
What is the history of Moerwijk?
Moerwijk belongs to the wave of southwestern neighborhoods that The Hague laid out after the Second World War, when blocks of apartments rose on open land at the city's edge. Planners set the buildings in long parallel rows divided by lawns and greenery, a modernist pattern meant to bring light and air to ordinary families. Parish churches followed the newcomers, which is why much of the district's built heritage is ecclesiastical, from the Shalomkerk to the Emmauskerk.
Just past its southern boundary sits the older town of Rijswijk, whose Oude Kerk predates these streets by centuries. Fields became a neighborhood in one generation.
Where is Moerwijk?
Moerwijk sits in the south of The Hague. It is one of the neighborhoods of the Escamp district, bordered by Rijswijk to the east and by the Laak quarter and its canals along the north. Morgenstond continues the row-housing to the west, while the railway line from Den Haag Hollands Spoor toward Rotterdam cuts straight across the neighborhood.
Its own stop, Den Haag Moerwijk station, sits on that track.
