Havstein kirke with its kirkegård holds the older ground, while Byåsen kirke serves the modern suburb, the pair standing among the hillside streets that look down over Trondheim toward the fjord.
What is the history of Byåsen?
Byåsen grew on old farm ground. The ridge above Trondheim held scattered holdings around Havstein before the tram line climbed the hill and drew the city outward onto the slopes. Havstein kirke and its kirkegård mark the older settlement, and the newer Byåsen kirke serves the suburb that filled the hillside as the century turned.
The Sporveismuseet i Trondheim now keeps the memory of the very trams that opened this side of the city to building.
