The municipality runs from the built-up lowland edge, alongside the wider urban area of the province, up into the Sierra Madre foothills, and the two halves ask for completely different decisions about where to spend the night. Down on the lowland side, near the everyday centre of Montalban, stays sit close to the shops and the Eulogio Rodriguez Ancestral House. It suits a short, practical stop.
Further in, the ground climbs toward the range, and the draw is Avilon Zoo and the country beyond it rather than anything urban; beds up there are scarce, so the trip is often made in a day. Whichever side suits, distances inside Rodriguez are long, because the municipality covers far more ground than its built-up part suggests, reaching back from the lowland edge into the hills for a considerable way. Many travellers do exactly that.
They base themselves nearer the Marikina Sports Complex or elsewhere in the province of Rizal, then come out to Rodriguez for the foothills, the zoo and the ground that rises into the Sierra Madre before returning the same evening.

What is the history of Rodriguez?
The original name of this place is Montalban, and it has outlasted every official alternative applied to it. Rodriguez took its charter in 1909, growing as a lowland town at the foothills of the Sierra Madre with the range at its back and the province of Rizal spreading away in front. The range set the limits of the settlement's ground, and the town grew along the lowland below it rather than up into the hills.
Speech kept Montalban alive. Through every renaming the older word stayed in daily use, so that no one in the surrounding towns of Rizal ever had to relearn what to call the place. The other name honours a person.
Eulogio Rodriguez, a senator, was commemorated when the municipality was renamed, and the Eulogio Rodriguez Ancestral House still carries the family name in the built record of the town. Montalban was restored as the official form, having never really left, so that maps and signs came back into line with what people had gone on saying all along. Two names, one continuous town.
The Sierra Madre has watched both, and the foothills that fixed the town's site are the one part of the story no council ever voted on.

Rodriguez is reached by road from the urban side of Rizal, with no other practical way in. The approach climbs gently. Traffic threads out of the built-up part of the province toward the foothills, and the last stretch runs along the edge of the Sierra Madre rather than into it, which keeps the journey slower than the distance on a map suggests.
