About Miasteczko Śląskie
Miasteczko Śląskie has worked metal since the 1530s.
What is Miasteczko Śląskie known for?
The town grew from a mining settlement after lead and silver ores were found, became a free mining town in 1562, and still works metal: the Miasteczko Śląskie Zinc Smelter, opened in 1968, is its largest plant, producing zinc and lead in one process. Miasteczko means little town; the name appears only in the 19th century, and Śląskie was added in 1963.
What are the main landmarks in Miasteczko Śląskie?
The wooden church of St George and the Assumption, on Dworcowa Street with its belfry of 1666, is Miasteczko Śląskie's landmark, and it lies on the Wooden Architecture Route of the Silesian Voivodeship. A second church of the Assumption dates from 1908. Miasteczko Śląskie's register of monuments adds the Chapel of St Mark in Żyglin from the 18th century, a manor granary of 1795 in Żyglinek, restored in 1965, the former hunting lodge in Bibiela, and a 19th-century Jewish cemetery.
What is the history of Miasteczko Śląskie?
Miasteczko Śląskie began with the ores of lead and silver found near Żyglin in the 1530s, and the mining settlement of Żyglińskie Góry grew around them. On 23 April 1561 Georg Frederick of Ansbach, who held the Bytom lands, granted it town rights, the German name Georgenberg, and two coats of arms, both carrying a miner's pick, and in 1562 Miasteczko Śląskie became a free mining town. It lost its rights in 1808.
It regained them in 1866, became a rural commune in 1946 and a town again in 1963, was joined to Tarnowskie Góry in 1975, and was made a town once more at the end of 1994. In the plebiscite of 20 March 1921 a majority of the town voted for Poland, and it became Polish in 1922; its Jewish community, with a synagogue from the mid-19th century, lasted until 1923. A zinc and lead smelter opened in 1968.
It was a major source of air pollution in the north of the old Katowice Voivodeship in the 1970s and 1980s, until works from the early 1990s cut its heavy-metal emissions.
