Where to stay in Świętochłowice

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Skałka or the centre. The Skałka Sport and Recreation Centre sits on the open side of Świętochłowice, with water and playing ground beside it, and rooms near there suit a stay built around the outdoors rather than around exhibition cases. The centre is the other choice.

Streets around Our Lady of the Rosary church in Świętochłowice put the Muzeum Miejskie w Świętochłowicach and the Muzeum Powstań Śląskich w Świętochłowicach within a walk. Neither side of Świętochłowice offers many rooms. Świętochłowice is small and hemmed in by Chorzów, so many visitors book on the Chorzów side or in Katowice and treat the city as a short hop inside the Metropolis GZM. That works in both directions.

The Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, the Silesian Stadium and the Museum of Steel Industry in Chorzów all lie closer to Świętochłowice than a Katowice address would suggest, and the Rawa marks the low line the built-up streets follow between them. John the Baptist church in Świętochłowice marks the older parish streets, and the Prezydent winding tower gives the industrial quarter a landmark visible from most of the Silesian Highlands ground the city stands on. Two nights is plenty.

Holy Trinity Church and the town hall in Chorzów fill the walk between the two sides for anyone staying longer than that.

About Świętochłowice

Coal and steel shaped the ground.

What is Świętochłowice known for?

The Prezydent winding tower stands over the same coalfield, while the Muzeum Powstań Śląskich w Świętochłowicach and the Muzeum Miejskie w Świętochłowicach keep the record of what the pits and the mills left behind. Skałka takes the other half. The Skałka Sport and Recreation Centre gives Świętochłowice its water and its open ground, and John the Baptist church in Świętochłowice anchors the parish streets that run back towards Chorzów.

What are the main landmarks in Świętochłowice?

Skałka and the winding tower lead. The Skałka Sport and Recreation Centre, the Prezydent winding tower and the two municipal collections, the Muzeum Miejskie w Świętochłowicach and the Muzeum Powstań Śląskich w Świętochłowicach, carry most of what the city itself puts on a map. Chorzów supplies the rest.

The Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, the Museum of Steel Industry in Chorzów and the Silesian Stadium with its monuments to Gerard Cieślik and Kamila Skolimowska all sit within a short run of the boundary.

What is the history of Świętochłowice?

The charter year is 1313. For centuries after that Świętochłowice was farm ground in Silesia, a settlement with no particular claim on the region beyond its parish, and nothing in that early record predicts what the coalfield would later make of it. Coal changed the account.

The Prezydent winding tower is the plainest survivor of the industry that rebuilt the place, and the Museum of Steel Industry in Chorzów, just over the boundary, holds the record of the mills that worked the same seam. Churches came with the growth. Our Lady of the Rosary church in Świętochłowice and John the Baptist church in Świętochłowice both serve the built-up centre, while Holy Trinity Church and the Evangelical church from Bytom-Bobrek stand among the listed buildings that the same period left across the district.

Two museums keep the civic record. The Muzeum Miejskie w Świętochłowicach holds the town's own history, and the Muzeum Powstań Śląskich w Świętochłowicach carries the uprisings in its name, which fixes the twentieth century as the stretch of the past the city marks most deliberately. Chorzów grew alongside it.

The town hall in Chorzów, the Post Office Building, Chorzów and Kalide house date from the decades when the two places industrialised together on the Silesian Highlands, and the Silesian Stadium later drew the monuments to Gerard Cieślik and Kamila Skolimowska onto the same ground. The Rawa ran through all of it. Saint Lawrence church in Chorzów and Mary Magdalene church in Chorzów Stary keep the older parishes that the coal era grew around, and Świętochłowice ended up a city with powiat rights inside the Metropolis GZM rather than a village on that river.

Where is Świętochłowice?

Thirteen square kilometres, no more. The Rawa runs through Świętochłowice inside the Silesian Highlands, and the city presses directly against Chorzów on one side and the wider Metropolis GZM on the others. Skałka holds the open ground.

The Skałka Sport and Recreation Centre and the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park across the boundary account for most of the green within reach of the streets.

What is the climate of Świętochłowice?

The Silesian Highlands set the terms. Świętochłowice stands on that high inland ground well away from any sea, so its year runs through a temperate cycle of cold winters and warm summers that the shallow Rawa valley does little to soften. Skałka fills in summer. Winter shifts the same crowd towards the Muzeum Miejskie w Świętochłowicach and the Muzeum Powstań Śląskich w Świętochłowicach.

How do you get to Świętochłowice?

Arrivals come through Katowice. Świętochłowice counts as one of the central towns of the Metropolis GZM, so approaches run across built-up ground rather than open country. Chorzów is next door. The shared boundary puts the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park and the Silesian Stadium within an ordinary local journey of the Prezydent winding tower and the centre.
