Khostinsky City District was constituted in 1951, one of four city districts carved out of Sochi alongside Tsentralny City District, Adlersky City District and Lazarevsky City District. Matsesta anchored the resort trade. The balneological cure at its sulphur springs drew visitors to this stretch of shore, and the sanatorium suburbs that spread around them filled with the Soviet architecture that still lines the slopes.
