Water is never far here. Blocks stand right on the quay along Hammarby sjö, and the courtyards behind them are green, so the quarter reads as inner city with a shoreline. Four base areas make it up.
Danviksklippan, Luma, Mårtensdal and Sickla udde each carry their own character, and the highest ground is the top of Henriksdalsberget at fifty-seven metres. The Tvärbanan has run to Sickla udde since 2002.

What are the main landmarks in Södra Hammarbyhamnen?
The Luma factory gave one base area its name. Kooperativa förbundet built the lamp works there in 1929 and 1930 and shipped its material through the harbour. General Motors came a year earlier.
The company set up in 1928 and assembled cars from parts shipped in from the United States, and Osram-Elektraverken, a rival to Luma, established itself here as well. Nine point blocks stand on Danviksklippan. They were built from 1940 and were for many years the only housing in the district, before the wholesalers moved onto the Hammarby gård site in the 1940s.
What is the history of Södra Hammarbyhamnen?
The ground belonged to the Hammarby gård estate in Nacka. It came to the city of Stockholm on 1 January 1930, and the water level of Hammarby sjö was lowered through the 1920s to open the Hammarbyleden from Mälaren out to the Saltsjön. Industry filled the shore for sixty years.
General Motors, the Luma lamp works and a row of wholesalers worked here until firms began leaving in the 1980s, when the buildings that were left decayed on demolition contracts. Planning turned in 1991. The city planning office presented a detailed overview plan that took its cue from Berlin, closed blocks with open courtyards, and political interest sharpened after Stockholm decided in 1996 to bid for the games of 2004.
Athens got them instead. A new overview plan of 1998 covered two hundred hectares between Skanstull and Danvikstull, a third of it kept for existing business, and building began the same year at Sickla udde after the contaminated ground had been cleaned. The first people moved in during the autumn of 2000.

Södra Hammarbyhamnen lies on the southern and eastern side of Hammarby sjö in Stockholm, bordering Södermalm, Årsta, Johanneshov, Hammarbyhöjden and Björkhagen, and Henriksdal and Danviken in Nacka.
