Annedal, Gothenburg — Area Guide & Where to Stay
Annedal is a central district of Gothenburg, the harbour city on the coast of south-western Sweden.
About AnnedalWhere to stay in Annedal
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Annedal puts you close to the centre. It is a quieter inner quarter than the streets around Haga, yet the old town and the sights of central Gothenburg sit within a short walk. If you want a calm base by Annedalskyrkan with Skansen Kronan and the cafés of Haga at the foot of the slope, this is a fair place to book over the busier core.
The pace here is residential.

About Annedal
What are the main landmarks in Annedal?
Annedalskyrkan anchors the quarter. Its tower rises among the streets of the district, the clear local marker of Annedal. Within easy reach the hilltop redoubt of Skansen Kronan crowns the ridge over neighbouring Haga, and the spire of Oscar Fredriks kyrka stands close by in the inner web of Gothenburg.
The art and collections of the central city lie a short walk off, from Göteborgs konstmuseum on the heights to the parish church of Vasakyrkan in the streets towards Linnéstaden.
What is the history of Annedal?
Annedal rose as workers' housing south of the old town. The quarter took shape on the hillsides as Gothenburg spread outward, and a parish formed around the building of Annedalskyrkan among its streets. The redoubt of Skansen Kronan watched over it from the heights nearby.
What began as a packed district of small homes became part of the inner ring of Gothenburg, set between Haga and the rising ground towards Johanneberg in Västra Götaland County.
Where is Annedal?
Annedal lies just south of the centre of Gothenburg. It is a compact inner quarter set on rising ground, hemmed in by Haga and Olivedal to the west and by the slopes that climb towards Johanneberg and Linnéstaden, with the older heart of the city stretching north towards the water. The whole of it belongs to Gothenburg, the chief city of Västra Götaland County in south-western Sweden.
