About Nordstaden
What are the main landmarks in Nordstaden?
Culture clusters in these blocks. Nordstaden gathers the Göteborgs stadsmuseum, the city museum housed in the old East India Company building, together with the Tyska kyrkan and the Maritiman ships moored along the quay as Göteborgs Maritima Centrum. From here the inner districts of Gothenburg, including neighbouring Centrum, are an easy walk.
What is the history of Nordstaden?
The old town grew here first. Nordstaden holds the original fortified core of Gothenburg, the canal-ringed grid laid out when the city was founded in 1621, long before quarters such as Haga and Gamlestaden filled in around it. The Tyska kyrkan, the German church, has stood among these streets for centuries.
That early plan still shapes the district.
Where is Nordstaden?
It sits at the heart of the city. Nordstaden occupies northern Gothenburg, the grid of canals and old streets that forms the inner core, bordered by the Centrum district to the south and by Gamlestaden further out to the east. This is south-western Sweden.
