About JohannebergWhere to stay in Johanneberg
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Johanneberg suits a quieter, well-placed stay. The terraced streets of the ridge are calmer than the centre, yet Liseberg, Universeum and Världskulturmuseet sit right at the northern foot and the heart of Gothenburg is a short ride down. Book here if you want the fairground and museums on your doorstep with student cafés and room to breathe above them. Annedal and Linnéstaden lie just over to the west when you want more of the inner city.

About Johanneberg
What are the main landmarks in Johanneberg?
Liseberg sets the tone. The amusement park spreads at the northern foot of Johanneberg and pulls visitors up to the edge of the district from across Gothenburg. Beside it stand the glass dome of Universeum and the collections of Världskulturmuseet, a cluster of the city's busiest draws within easy reach of the ridge.
The art museum of Göteborgs konstmuseum closes the great avenue a short way north, while the old church of neighbouring Örgryte, Örgryte gamla kyrka, marks the slope to the east.
What is the history of Johanneberg?
The ridge filled up early. Curving terraces of pale apartment blocks went up across the high ground as Gothenburg pushed south, and a technical campus took root on the heights, giving Johanneberg its mix of student life and lived-in streets. The fairground of Liseberg opened at its foot and drew crowds up to the edge of the quarter.
From planned terraces and that hillside campus this part of southern Gothenburg became a district of its own, set above Annedal in Västra Götaland County.
Where is Johanneberg?
Johanneberg climbs a ridge in southern Gothenburg. The quarter sits on high ground just south of the centre, with the amusement park of Liseberg and the museums around Universeum gathered at its northern foot, Annedal and Linnéstaden off to the west and the older district of Örgryte falling away to the east. The whole of it belongs to Gothenburg, the chief city of Västra Götaland County in south-western Sweden.
