What is the history of Greeley?
The Union Colony came first. Nathan Meeker organised the settlement at the close of the 1860s and named it for Horace Greeley, the New York Tribune editor who had promoted the scheme, which makes this a city founded on a newspaper's argument rather than on a strike of ore. The Meeker Home survives.
It was the founder's own house, and the First Congregational Church belongs to the same early years of the colony. Traffic passed here before any of that. The South Platte River carried the route of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush that ran from 1858 to 1861, so prospectors were crossing this ground a decade before anyone planted a colony on it.
Farming built the town instead. The Plumb Farm Learning Center and the Centennial Village Museum record that agricultural century, and Weld County made its wealth from the land rather than from the diggings the river route once served. Colleges reshaped the place.
The University of Northern Colorado turned a farming seat into a college city, and Aims Community College widened that further, so a town founded by an editor's colonists ended up defined by its lecture halls. Rail left a museum behind.
