The year to hold onto is 1889. Lakewood dates from then, on ground immediately west of Denver, at a point when Jefferson County lay outside the city rather than continuous with it. Growth closed that gap.
The Denver Metropolitan Area absorbed the whole corridor, and Lakewood ended up the largest municipality in Jefferson County and one of the biggest in Colorado, without ever becoming part of Denver itself.
