Coral Springs was founded in 1963, twenty miles from Fort Lauderdale and well inland of the coast, on ground that now lies wholly inside the built-up part of Broward County. The date is recent by any measure. A covered bridge, the only one in Florida, became the city's signature piece of construction, and the municipal history museum keeps the record of what followed it.
Institutions came with the growth. Our Town gathers the city each year. That festival, the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and the Coral Springs Museum of Art together give a young municipality a cultural life of its own.
Faith communities took their own shape, from Calvary Chapel of Fort Lauderdale nearby to Our Lady of Health Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of Miami, whose rite carries a name from far outside Florida. Sport arrived as well, and the Evert Tennis Academy drew players to a place that had existed for barely a lifetime, while Butterfly World opened just past the line and gave the whole district a second reason to be visited.
