Where to stay in Hialeah

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Hialeah is a place people live in, not a resort. Beds here serve Miami-Dade County business and family visits more than sightseeing, and the city's separately numbered grid means an address needs reading carefully against the rest of the county's system. Get the street number right.

Hialeah Park Race Track is the one fixed orientation point most arrivals share. The museums are elsewhere. Rubell Museum, the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art and the Haitian Heritage Museum all sit out in the wider Miami metropolitan area rather than in Hialeah, so a culture-led trip is better based closer to Miami.

Hialeah lies west-northwest of it. That is a short enough distance to make either choice workable. Older houses are scattered across the county.

Tinsman House, Wheeler House, Lua Curtiss House I, Lua Curtiss House II and the Millard-McCarty House stand among the protected buildings of Miami-Dade County, alongside St. Dominic Catholic Church and New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Building at 257 Northeast 91st Street and the Building at 353 Northeast 91st Street show how tightly that county register is drawn. Spanish is the working language across South Florida.

One night usually does it, though two suit anyone splitting time between Hialeah Park Race Track and the Sunshine State Arch.

About Hialeah

The street numbers are its own.

What is Hialeah known for?

Hialeah is one of a handful of places in Miami-Dade County, with Homestead, Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach, to number its grid separately from the rest of the county. Two landmarks carry the name. Hialeah Park Race Track and the Hialeah Seaboard Air Line Railway Station are the sites that belong to the city itself rather than to Greater Miami around it.

What are the main landmarks in Hialeah?

Two names begin with the city's. Hialeah Park Race Track and the Hialeah Seaboard Air Line Railway Station are the entries that carry Hialeah itself, and the Sunshine State Arch stands with them. The rest belong to the county.

Rubell Museum, the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art and the Haitian Heritage Museum are museums of the wider Miami metropolitan area, while Tinsman House, Wheeler House and the Millard-McCarty House are its older residences.

What is the history of Hialeah?

Incorporation came in 1925. Hialeah numbers its street grid separately from the rest of Miami-Dade County, a system it shares with Homestead, Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach. The grid still holds.

It is the clearest civic thing the city owns, and it still governs how an address in Hialeah is read against one in Miami. The railway left a station. Hialeah Seaboard Air Line Railway Station survives from the years when the Seaboard Air Line reached this part of Miami-Dade County, and it remains one of the two protected sites that carry the city's own name.

Hialeah Park Race Track is the other. Both stand west-northwest of Miami, inside the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida. The rest of the register is county-wide.

Lua Curtiss House I, Lua Curtiss House II, the Millard-McCarty House, Tinsman House and Wheeler House record older building across Miami-Dade County, and St. Dominic Catholic Church and New Covenant Presbyterian Church do the same for its congregations. Museums came late. Rubell Museum, the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art and the Haitian Heritage Museum belong to a Greater Miami that had already grown well past the Hialeah of 1925.

Where is Hialeah?

About 59 square kilometres. Hialeah occupies that much of Miami-Dade County, west-northwest of Miami, in the subtropical band of the northern hemisphere and inland from the beaches that South Florida is better known for. The grid is the giveaway.

Street numbers here run on the city's own system rather than the county's, which makes Hialeah read on a map like Homestead, Surfside or Golden Beach rather than like the county around it.

What is the climate of Hialeah?

Subtropical, and inland with it. Hialeah sits west-northwest of Miami in the northern hemisphere's subtropical band, far enough from the water that the sea has less say here than it does across the rest of South Florida. Plan the day around finding shade.

Hialeah Park Race Track fills an open site, while the Rubell Museum and the Haitian Heritage Museum take the hottest hours indoors elsewhere in Miami-Dade County.

How do you get to Hialeah?

Miami is the reference point. Hialeah lies west-northwest of it inside Miami-Dade County, and the Hialeah Seaboard Air Line Railway Station is the one arrival point on the protected list. Read the street numbers first.

The city's grid is numbered separately from the county's, so an address given in the Miami metropolitan area convention will not land where a driver expects it to in Hialeah.
