The Liberty Bell Memorial Museum, the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church all stand within that neighbouring stretch, so a visitor basing here for culture will be driving out most days. Green Gables belongs to the same ground. The trade-off is simple: the creek end for water and age, the western grid for space and quiet, with the Palm Bay Metropolitan Area spread wide enough that neither choice is wrong for long.

The city expanded away from the creek across flat ground, and the pattern is legible on any map: age at the water, subdivisions everywhere else. Interstate 95 drew the later line. The newer half of the city lies west of that highway and south of the Tillman Canal, and it accounts for most of the built area rather than the older pocket by the creek.
Palm Bay overtook its neighbours in scale. It became the largest city of Brevard County and the largest by land as well, the core of the Palm Bay Metropolitan Area, without ever building the centre that usually comes with that rank. Melbourne kept the older institutions.
