Plantation sits inland from it, a grid of low housing and office parks where hotels line the through-roads rather than any walkable street, and that makes the city a practical base more than an atmospheric one. Central Broward Regional Park is the exception, a large green space that gives this side of the county a reason to stay put rather than drive out every evening.
Rooms are plentiful along the main roads. Fort Lauderdale itself is the alternative, and a room there puts the Stranahan House, the War Memorial Auditorium, and the Museum of Discovery and Science on the same side of the county. Families tend to split the difference.
The Young at Art Museum and the Buehler Planetarium and Observatory sit on the inland side with Plantation, and a base here keeps both within a short drive of the door. What is the history of Plantation?
The name records a failure. Land here was held in part by the Everglades Plantation Company, whose attempt to establish a rice plantation on this land came to nothing, and the city that followed kept the word anyway. Incorporation came in 1953.
Plantation grew from that point as part of the outward spread of the Miami metropolitan area, filling in as a suburb of Fort Lauderdale rather than developing a centre of its own. Older buildings survive across the county. The Stranahan House, the Williams House, and the Sam Gilliam House predate the suburb entirely, and Old Dillard High School records a separate strand of Broward County history that the later street grid did not erase.
Institutions arrived with the population. The Museum of Discovery and Science, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, and the War Memorial Auditorium serve the wider area, while the Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library, the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, and the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum each hold a narrower collection. Faith kept pace.

Plantation is a suburb rather than a hub, so visitors come along the county roads from Fort Lauderdale or across from the Miami metropolitan core, and a car is assumed from the first mile.
