Where to stay in West Palm Beach

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Two shores, one decision. West Palm Beach holds the mainland side of the Lake Worth Lagoon while Palm Beach occupies the barrier island opposite, and a visitor picks between city blocks and island frontage before anything else. The Norton Museum of Art is the mainland anchor.

Rooms near it put the galleries, the older streets and the lagoon itself within reach on foot, which is unusual for a Florida city of this size and worth taking advantage of. The island side carries the older money. The Flagler Museum, the Society of the Four Arts and Bethesda-by-the-Sea all sit over there, along with Maison de L'Amitié, and a room on Palm Beach puts them within walking distance at the cost of a crossing whenever the mainland is needed.

Conventions pull the other way. The Palm Beach County Convention Center fills its own quarter of the city, and beds around it suit a trip whose reason is a hall rather than a beach. Older residential streets hold the Mickens House, the Clifton Rice House and the Grant Van Valkenburg House, quieter than either waterfront and better for a stay measured in walks than in views.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church marks that ground. Palm Beach County spreads inland behind it all.

About West Palm Beach

The Norton Museum of Art sets the tone.

What is West Palm Beach known for?

Palm Beach County's cultural weight concentrates here and on the barrier island opposite, where the Flagler Museum and the Society of the Four Arts stand within sight of the Lake Worth Lagoon. The Palm Beach County Convention Center handles the other trade. Older buildings fill in behind: Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Mickens House and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum.

The lagoon divides them.

What are the main landmarks in West Palm Beach?

The list runs to fourteen names. On the mainland the Norton Museum of Art leads, with the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum holding the county record and the Palm Beach County Convention Center covering the modern trade. Churches take the next tier.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist and Bethesda-by-the-Sea on the island each keep a congregation, while the Brelsford House, the Mickens House, the Clifton Rice House and the Grant Van Valkenburg House survive from the decades after 1884.

What is the history of West Palm Beach?

The city dates from 1884. Palm Beach County grew around it, and the county seat settled here on the mainland shore of the Lake Worth Lagoon rather than on the barrier island, which is the division the two places have kept since. A museum carries the Flagler name.

The Flagler Museum stands on the island opposite, and the Society of the Four Arts and Bethesda-by-the-Sea belong to the same side of the water, so the island holds the older institutions while the mainland holds the county's business. Mainland houses keep the remainder of that record. The Brelsford House, the Clifton Rice House, the Grant Van Valkenburg House and the Mickens House each carry a family name into the register, and between them they mark the generations that built the mainland city.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the First Church of Christ, Scientist followed the same growth. Institutions came later. The Norton Museum of Art gave the city a collection of its own rather than a borrowed one, and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum put the county's record in a building.

The Palm Beach County Convention Center and Maison de L'Amitié belong to much later chapters. West Palm Beach kept the county seat throughout.

Where is West Palm Beach?

The Lake Worth Lagoon is the defining edge. West Palm Beach occupies the mainland bank, directly opposite the barrier island that carries Palm Beach, so the city faces water on its eastern side and Palm Beach County's flat interior on the others. Fifty-eight square miles in all.

Nothing rises above the built line.

What is the climate of West Palm Beach?

The barrier island takes the first weather. Air off the water crosses Palm Beach before it reaches the mainland, and by the time it has cleared the Lake Worth Lagoon the edge has gone out of it, which leaves West Palm Beach warmer through the afternoon than the island opposite. Storms belong to summer.

Winter is the dry half of the year, mild enough that the walk between the Norton Museum of Art and the waterfront is the pleasant one.

How do you get to West Palm Beach?

Palm Beach County brings most people in. The mainland position puts West Palm Beach on the land side of every approach, so arrivals reach it before the barrier island and cross the Lake Worth Lagoon afterwards if Palm Beach is the destination. The Palm Beach County Convention Center draws its own traffic.

Within the city the Norton Museum of Art and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum stand on the same mainland grid, so a car parked once serves both.
