California keeps no hotel trade of its own. The neighborhood runs as houses, woodland and waterworks along Kellogg Avenue, and beds on that stretch are scarce, so most visitors sleep in Cincinnati proper and come out to the river mouth for the day. The ground itself is the draw.
California Woods Nature Preserve takes a morning on its trails, the California Golf Course covers the slope above the avenue, and the Combs-Hehl Bridge carries Interstate 275 over the Ohio River at the southern end. If you want to wake up within reach of the water, look to Mount Washington on the ridge north of here.

What is the history of California?
California takes its name from the state of California and stood as a separate community until Cincinnati annexed it in 1909. The waterworks arrived first. Between 1898 and 1907 the city moved its supply upriver and built here, sinking the River Pumping Station onto a timber caisson at 5800 Kellogg Avenue and laying settling basins, filter beds and a clear water reservoir along the bank.
A nature center went up in the woods in 1938. The Combs-Hehl Bridge opened in December 1979, carrying Interstate 275 across the Ohio River at the southern edge.
