Most of the hill went up as subdivisions after the Second World War and has stayed residential ever since, which leaves a traveller booking a bed elsewhere in Cincinnati and driving out along Beechmont Avenue. What are the main landmarks in Mount Washington?
Mount Washington ranges its landmarks along Beechmont Avenue, from the water tower at the crest to the seminary campus at the southeast end. The Mount Washington Water Tower rises at the Campus Lane corner, a reinforced-concrete standpipe of 1939 under an Art Deco skin, carrying a navigational beacon for Lunken Airport, northwest in Linwood. Mount Washington Cemetery lies alongside it.
The Lombard-Romanesque campus of Saint Gregory Seminary holds the Athenaeum of Ohio, with Archbishop McNicholas High School up the road. Stanbery Park holds the western slope.
What is the history of Mount Washington?
Mount Washington began as farmland in Anderson Township, inside the Virginia Military District, with settlers working the ground by the 1790s. John L. Corbly laid out the village in 1846 along the Ohio Pike, and Stephen J. Sutton bought the first lot, opened the first store, and gave the place its name. Incorporation followed in 1867.
The Cincinnati, Georgetown and Portsmouth Railroad was built through in 1877 and 1878, and Cincinnati annexed the hill in 1911. The Stanbery family handed its estate over in 1940, and Stanbery Park has held the western slope since.
