Spring Grove Village keeps no hotels, so book a room in Clifton on the hill to the south or in Downtown Cincinnati, then drive back up Interstate 75 for the day. The cemetery gate stands at 4521 Spring Grove Avenue. Behind it, 733 acres of lawn, water, and cut stone absorb a slow half day, and the grounds run as an arboretum as much as a burial ground.
Wear flat shoes. East of the cemetery wall the neighborhood narrows to a grid of short streets around Derby Avenue and East Epworth Avenue.

What are the main landmarks in Spring Grove Village?
Spring Grove Cemetery was chartered on January 21, 1845, took its first burial that September, and became a National Historic Landmark in 2007. Adolph Strauch turned its swampy ground into ornamental lakes and banned fences and hedges around the plots, and he lies on Strauch Island in one of them. Samuel Hannaford drew the Spring Grove Cemetery Chapel, the Winton Place Methodist Episcopal Church at 700 East Epworth Avenue, and the Samuel Hannaford House, his own home at 768 Derby Avenue.
Hannaford is buried here too. All three entered the National Register on one day, March 3, 1980.
What is the history of Spring Grove Village?
Spring Grove Village was farmland called the Mill Creek Township Farm before the canal and then the railroad made a town of it. The village incorporated in 1882, and Cincinnati annexed it in November 1903. Rail lines running north out of Cincinnati Union Terminal passed through the Winton Place station, and the neighborhood answered to Winton Place for a century.
A vote retired that name in 2007. The community council wanted distance from Winton Woods to the north, and it wanted the cemetery named instead.
Where is Spring Grove Village?
Mill Creek runs the western side of Spring Grove Village, which follows the valley north from Clifton to Winton Hills, with St. Bernard east beyond Interstate 75.
