What is the history of Green Point?
Green Point began as common grazing land outside colonial Cape Town, an open stretch between the town and the sea. A lighthouse went up at Mouille Point in the 1820s to warn ships off the rocks. For years the common held a racecourse and sports grounds.
When Cape Town hosted matches in the 2010 World Cup, the Cape Town Stadium rose on the old sports ground, and the urban park was laid out around it.
Where is Green Point?
Green Point lies on the low ground between Signal Hill and the Atlantic, north of Sea Point and west of the V&A Waterfront. Beach Road hugs the coast. The Mouille Point shore forms its seaward edge, while Main Road runs through the centre and the promenade traces the rocks along the water.
