The peninsula and the sand pull in different directions. Rooms in the older part of Mossel Bay stand on the north-facing side of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, close to the harbour and the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, which suits anyone who wants the town on foot. The streets there came first.
Beds east of the centre sit among the newer suburbs that spread along the sandy shore of the bay, and the trade is a longer walk into town for the beach at the door. Mossel Bay is small enough that neither choice strands anyone, but the older streets and the sandy shore make quite different mornings. Pinnacle Point is the outer option.
Staying along that part of the coast puts the Garden Route traffic at a distance, though it also puts the harbour, the museum complex, and the Mossel Bay War Memorial at driving range rather than walking range. Farm country lies behind all of it. Cape Town and Gqeberha both lie a long drive away, so the bay itself is what a night here is for.

What is the history of Mossel Bay?
The town dates from 1848. Mossel Bay grew as a harbour town, and the sheltered water that gave it a reason to exist also carried the parallel name Mosselbaai that the place still answers to. Building began on the north-facing side of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, where the older streets still stand, and the town later straddled the peninsula and spread eastwards along the sandy shore of the bay.
Older Mossel Bay still looks north across the water. Ships kept coming. The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex holds what the town has kept of that record.
Two markers anchor the town centre. The Mossel Bay War Memorial stands among the civic buildings, and Pinnacle Point lies out along the coast the town shares with the rest of the Garden Route. Farming and tourism carried the Western Cape district through the years that followed, and the road between Cape Town and Gqeberha kept traffic moving past the harbour rather than around it.
The sandy bay shore filled in behind them. Gqeberha, the largest city of the Eastern Cape, still marks the far end of that run. The harbour works on.
