Bardakčije, Sarajevo — Area Guide & Where to Stay
Bardakčije is an outlying local community of Sarajevo, the last of Centar's neighbourhoods before the boundary with Stari Grad.
About BardakčijeWhere to stay in Bardakčije
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Bardakčije is one of Centar's outer local communities, so a stay here means an apartment or a room in a house rather than a hotel desk, with the middle of Sarajevo reached on foot through Mejtaš, Bjelave. Stari Grad begins east of here. Cross that line and Svrzo's House, the Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church and the Latin Bridge follow, which suits anyone who wants the old quarter by day and a residential street after dark.
Breka, Koševo II holds the northern way out.
About Bardakčije
What are the main landmarks in Bardakčije?
The monuments sit outside Bardakčije, over the eastern boundary in Stari Grad and along the walking centre of Sarajevo, which leaves the neighbourhood a base rather than a sight. Svrzo's House stands over that line. Past it stand the Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church and the Old Synagogue in Sarajevo, while the Latin Bridge and the Šeher-Ćehaja Bridge carry two of the old river crossings.
The Bosniak Institute and the Cathedral of Jesus' Heart lie the other way, toward the middle of the city. North, past Breka, Koševo II, wait Pionirska dolina and the Zetra Ice Rink.
What is the history of Bardakčije?
Bardakčije exists on the map as a mjesna zajednica, the local-community unit Sarajevo uses below municipality level, and the whole of its shape is drawn from the units around it. Four mjesne zajednice hem it in. Hrastovi, Mrkovići and Breka, Koševo II close the north, Park, Višnjik and Mejtaš, Bjelave the west and south, and the eastern line hands the ground over to Stari Grad.
Centar keeps the rest. That eastern line matters more than the others, because it separates the municipality that governs the modern centre from the one holding the oldest quarters of Sarajevo.
Where is Bardakčije?
Bardakčije holds the eastern rim of Centar in Sarajevo, with Hrastovi, Mrkovići and Breka, Koševo II along the north. Stari Grad lies over the far side.
