Two bridges do the work. Šeher-Ćehaja Bridge carries the quarter over the Miljacka into Stari Grad at the head of the old town, and the Latin Bridge crosses the same water downstream, within the walk that also takes in Svrzo's House and Despić House. Upstream, past the last houses, Goat's Bridge arches the gorge in a single span. The Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track lies on the height above.

Bistrik ranks among the oldest settlements of Sarajevo. The quarter took the rising ground above the left bank of the Miljacka, and it has belonged, administratively and historically, to the municipality of Stari Grad, the old core that also holds Tašlihan and the Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church. It changed hands with empires.
The Cathedral of Jesus' Heart, the Old Synagogue in Sarajevo and the Bosniak Institute stand across the water as marks of the faiths and libraries that the old core gathered.
