What are the main landmarks in Mariakerke?
Two estates stand on the old dry land. Claeys-Bouüaert and the Sint-Paulusseminarie occupy ground that was among the few pieces above the marsh, and they are what survives of the landgoederen the village was made of. The road is the third landmark.
Brugsesteenweg grew out of the single way that once connected Mariakerke to Ghent. Monumental country houses fill out the list. They are what the deelgemeente is known for architecturally.
What is the history of Mariakerke?
This was an old village on wet ground. Nearly seventy per cent of Mariakerke was marsh, and estates stood on what was left, among them the ground now held by Claeys-Bouüaert and the Sint-Paulusseminarie. Access was a single road.
One way connected the village to Ghent, and it has since grown into the Brugsesteenweg. Independence lasted until 1977. Mariakerke was a commune in its own right until the municipal reorganisation of that year took it into Ghent as a deelgemeente.
It kept its country houses. Monumental landhuizen are what the deelgemeente is now known for, standing on the estate ground the marsh once surrounded.
