What are the main landmarks in Oostakker?
The Oostakker Basilica outranks the rest. Around it the parish churches multiply, with Sint-Amanduskerk, Sint-Bernadettekerk, Sint-Antonius Abtkerk, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboortekerk and the Goddelijke Voorzienigheidkerk each serving a corner of what stayed an independent municipality until 1977. Woning Scheeplos is the exception, the one named landmark here that is not a church.

What is the history of Oostakker?
Oostakker was its own municipality, and it lost ground piece by piece: Sint-Amandsberg was detached in 1872, then parcels went to Gent in 1900, in 1920 and again in 1927. Oostakker's independence ended in 1977. On the first day of that year Gent absorbed the municipality outright, closing a slow century in which annexation after annexation had already pared the territory back.
Oostakker kept the name, and Sint-Amandsberg never came back.
