Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The Dyle decides the geography of a stay. Mechelen City Hall, the Schepenhuis and the Duivelshuis stand in the old core, and the Church of Our Lady across the river Dijle names the other bank plainly enough to be a direction in itself. Take the core.
You get Museum Hof van Busleyden, the Vliegend Paard and Kazerne Dossin inside one walk, with the shops of the old streets on the way between them. Sint-Katelijnekerk and Saint John's Church are two more stops the walk can absorb without adding a bus. Families have another option.
Planckendael Zoo and Technopolis are the two that draw them, and Sint-Lambertustoren marks Muizen, so a room outside the core trades the cathedral tower for a day the children will remember. Beds thin fast beyond the ring. Nekkerspoel and Battel are hamlets, Walem, Heffen, Leest and Hombeek are villages, and none of them carries the kind of accommodation the centre does.
Plopsaqua Mechelen and the Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk give two more reasons to stay inside the municipality rather than treat Mechelen as a day trip from elsewhere in the province of Antwerp.

A carillon is a set of 24 or more bells hung in a church tower, and the school that teaches the instrument draws students to Mechelen from well beyond Flanders. St. Rumbold's Cathedral holds the tower everyone photographs, and Mechelen City Hall and the Schepenhuis carry the civic side of the same old core. Beyond those, the museums take over.

Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek and Muizen lie inside the same boundary as Mechelen proper, with Nekkerspoel and Battel as hamlets closer in.
What is the climate of Mechelen?
The Dyle keeps the low ground damp. Mechelen sits on both banks of that river in the temperate band, so mist off the water is a more ordinary feature of a morning here than any extreme of heat or cold. Frost stays brief.
Planckendael Zoo, Technopolis and Plopsaqua Mechelen between them cover both halves of the year, which is a sensible arrangement in a place where the outdoor season is long enough to plan around and never quite reliable.
How do you get to Mechelen?
The cathedral tower is the marker. Mechelen lies in the centre of Flanders inside the province of Antwerp, which puts it within the ordinary run of travel between the larger Flemish cities rather than at the end of a branch. Nekkerspoel sits adjacent.
That hamlet and Battel lie on the outskirts, and Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek and Muizen further out again, so the municipality is crossed before the city is reached.
