The city hall of Sint-Niklaas fixes the centre. Sint-Nicolaaskerk carries the city's own dedication, and the Salons voor Schone Kunsten, SteM Zwijgershoek and the Casino Gardens are all reachable from a room booked near the centre. Take the centre.
You get both tobacco museums, the Castrohof and the Architect's house of Hilaire De Boom without needing a car, which is not a claim many cities of this size can make. MAP - Mercator belongs to the same short list. Three towns lie outside it.
Belsele, Nieuwkerken-Waas and Sinaai share the municipality with Sint-Niklaas proper, and a room in any of them buys quiet at the cost of the walk back to Sint-Nicolaaskerk. Few beds sit outside the city proper. An 83 square kilometre municipality keeps almost all its accommodation in the city, and Christus Koningkerk, Heilig-Hartkerk and Sint-Jozefskerk mark parishes rather than places to sleep.
The Scheldt runs round the region on three sides, so any drive out of the municipality ends up meeting water sooner or later. Antwerp and Ghent are both close enough that some visitors sleep here and spend the day in one of them, which is a fair use of a Waasland base.

It covers 83 square kilometres, which is enough ground for Belsele, Nieuwkerken-Waas and Sinaai to sit well clear of the city they share a name and an administration with.

The Casino Gardens make the case. A public garden of that kind works in the temperate band, where winters stop short of hard and summers stop short of hot, and the planting can be left standing through both. Water surrounds the region.

How do you get to Sint-Niklaas?
Two larger cities flank it. Sint-Niklaas lies between Antwerp and Ghent, which puts it on the corridor that joins them and makes arriving from either the ordinary way in. The Schelde complicates the rest.
A region enclosed by that river on three sides has a limited number of ways across it, so approaches funnel through Belsele, Nieuwkerken-Waas or Sinaai before the city hall of Sint-Niklaas comes into view.
