Chorlton-on-Medlock's landmarks line Oxford Road. What is the history of Chorlton-on-Medlock?
Chorlton-on-Medlock began as a rural township on the south bank of the River Medlock, once known as Chorlton Row. The cotton boom of the early nineteenth century swallowed the fields, and terraces and villas filled the grid within a generation. Manchester absorbed the township in 1838.
Owens College, which grew into the University of Manchester, reached Oxford Road in 1873. In 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union at her Nelson Street home, making the neighbourhood a landmark of the suffragette struggle.
Where is Chorlton-on-Medlock?
Chorlton-on-Medlock occupies a wedge of inner Manchester between the city centre and the university belt. The River Medlock traces its northern edge. Along the west runs Oxford Road, the arterial corridor that carries buses past Grosvenor Square and the campuses of both universities.
