Rusholme's sights cluster around Platt Fields Park at its southern end. Within the park stands Platt Hall, a Georgian mansion built for a family of textile merchants, which later held Manchester's costume collection. Holy Trinity Platt Church rises on the park's northern edge.
The other draw is a street. It is the Curry Mile along Wilmslow Road, lined with restaurants, sweet shops and grocers. For larger galleries and museums, the university quarter of Chorlton-on-Medlock lies a short way north.
What is the history of Rusholme?
Rusholme began as a rural township south of Manchester and was absorbed into the growing city in 1885. Its grandest survival is Platt Hall, a Georgian house built in the 1760s for the Worsley family, textile merchants who owned the surrounding estate. Those grounds opened as Platt Fields Park in 1910.
During the twentieth century Wilmslow Road drew a large South Asian community, and its restaurants and grocers earned the name the Curry Mile. Terraced housing later filled the surrounding streets.
