New Islington's landmarks are its waterways, not its museums. The centrepiece is New Islington Marina, a purpose-built canal basin ringed by moorings and the modern housing blocks that rose across the regeneration site. Cotton Field Park opens beside it.
Its lawns and waterside walks give the neighbourhood a green edge along the basin. The Ashton Canal runs out from here toward east Manchester, and its towpath doubles as a walking and cycling route back into the city centre. For big galleries and collections, you cross into the centre; New Islington's own draw is the water.
What is the history of New Islington?
Historically New Islington lay in Lancashire, a part of Ancoats known as the cotton-spinning district that is often called the world's first industrial suburb, packed with mills and the terraced housing built for Manchester's textile workers. In the twentieth century those terraces were cleared for the Cardroom Estate, a council housing scheme that later fell into decline. The name New Islington was revived when the area was designated a regeneration site.
It was rebuilt around a new marina. Little of the old street grid survives, and the quarter that stands is a largely planned one, grafted onto one of the oldest industrial corners of the city.
Where is New Islington?
New Islington sits just east of Manchester city centre, hard against the older terraces of Ancoats. Old Mill Street runs through it, with the New Islington Metrolink stop on the tram line, while Great Ancoats Street separates the wider district from the city core to the west. At its heart is New Islington Marina, a basin cut from the Ashton Canal.
The area is compact. Its streets run down to the water on almost every side.
