St Chrysostom's Church marks its centre, and Rusholme's Wilmslow Road restaurants lie just south. Travellers who want the Curry Mile or the university on their doorstep sometimes stay here, but the city centre and Rusholme hold most of the wider area's guesthouses and hotels.

The park's own landmarks are quiet ones, set among the villas rather than on a tourist trail. St Chrysostom's Church stands on Anson Road, a Gothic marker near the centre of the estate. On the northern edge, at 84 Plymouth Grove, sits Elizabeth Gaskell's House, the villa where the novelist wrote and received guests.
Both are Victorian buildings in the estate's own idiom, brick and stone among mature trees. Neither draws crowds.

Victoria Park was laid out in the 1830s as a private residential estate, one of the earliest planned garden suburbs in England. Its promoters walled and gated the roads, charging tolls at the lodges to keep the area exclusive to the wealthy merchant families moving out from the smoke of the city. Grand villas rose behind the gates.
As Manchester spread, the private gates came down and the great houses passed to colleges, religious orders and university halls. The Victorian street plan survives even where the grandeur has faded.
Where is Victoria Park?
The suburb occupies a wedge of ground between Rusholme to the south and Longsight to the east, with Chorlton-on-Medlock and Ardwick closing it off to the north and west. Its western edge runs close to Oxford Road, the long approach that carries traffic out from the city centre toward Rusholme's Wilmslow Road. Daisy Bank Road, Anson Road and Upper Park Road trace the curving lines of the original estate.
Old lodge gates once guarded the entrances. Plymouth Grove marks the northern corner, where Elizabeth Gaskell's House still stands.
