What are the main landmarks in Northern Quarter?
Afflecks is the obvious landmark. The multi-storey emporium off Oldham Street packs independent stalls, studios and vintage sellers across a former textile warehouse. A preserved Victorian station on Newton Street, the Greater Manchester Police Museum opens its old cells and charge office to visitors.
Stevenson Square anchors the street-art scene, its walls repainted by rotating muralists. Beyond these, the draw is the shopfronts themselves, the record shops and galleries filling the ground floors along Tib Street.
What is the history of Northern Quarter?
The Northern Quarter grew up as the northern edge of Manchester's Victorian textile trade, its streets packed with warehouses, workshops and small manufacturers. Oldham Street ranked among the city's busiest shopping streets into the mid-20th century. Then trade drained away.
As retailers moved to the Arndale and the suburbs, the warehouses emptied and rents collapsed, leaving cheap space that drew artists, record dealers and independent traders back into the old mills. Afflecks opened in 1982 in one such building. The name Northern Quarter itself was adopted during the regeneration of the 1990s.
Where is Northern Quarter?
The Northern Quarter sits at the north-eastern corner of central Manchester, between the shopping core around High Street and the ring road at Great Ancoats Street. That road marks its border with Ancoats. Oldham Street cuts diagonally from Piccadilly up towards Swan Street, and the grid of Tib Street, Thomas Street and Stevenson Square fans out on either side.
Its southern edge meets Piccadilly and the approach to the city centre.
