Fallowfield keeps few grand monuments. Its best-known landmark is Owens Park, the University of Manchester's sprawling student village beside Wilmslow Road. Along the northern edge, Platt Fields Park holds Platt Hall, a Georgian merchant's house that once served the city as a gallery of historic costume.
Beside the park stands Holy Trinity Platt, a Gothic Revival church whose spire marks the corner of Wilmslow Road. The rest is terraces and student houses.
What is the history of Fallowfield?
Fallowfield began as farmland south of Manchester. The name recalls the fallow fields that once lay across the area. In the Victorian era wealthy merchants built grand villas along its lanes, and the neighbouring Victoria Park estate set the tone for genteel suburban living.
A railway cut through in the late nineteenth century, and its old track survives as the Fallowfield Loop. Platt Fields Park opened to the public in 1910. Halls of residence followed from the mid-twentieth century, and Owens Park turned the old villa suburb into the University of Manchester's student quarter.
Where is Fallowfield?
Fallowfield forms a belt of south Manchester between Rusholme and Withington, threaded along Wilmslow Road. To the west lie Whalley Range and Moss Side; to the east sit Ladybarn and Levenshulme. Platt Fields Park marks its northern edge.
Running along the southern side is the Fallowfield Loop, a former railway line that has been turned into a green cycle path linking the suburb to Chorlton and Levenshulme.
