Bhagalpur was the seat of an old kingdom. In ancient days the land of Anga ruled here from Champa by the Ganges, and the city grew as a river port of the eastern plain. Then the Palas raised a university.
Some way upriver the Pala kings built the great monastery of Vikramshila, where monks from across Asia came to study. The looms made the town famous. Down the years the weavers of Bhagalpur spun tussar silk on their looms, and the cloth carried the city's name across India.
The river kept its wild life. In the Ganges below the town swam the rare river dolphins, and Bhagalpur guarded a stretch of the river for them, keeping its silk, its ruins, and its dolphins. The looms still work the silk.
