Puducherry
Colonial arcades and grid streets set the tone in Puducherry, a coastal city in the Union Territory of Puducherry, long known as Pondicherry.Where to stay →About Union Territory of Puducherry
France ruled here for 138 years.
What is Union Territory of Puducherry known for?
That legacy is the draw: the old French Quarter of Puducherry city, laid out on a strict grid of straight streets, and the seafront Promenade along the Bay of Bengal. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the experimental township of Auroville pull a steadier, quieter kind of visitor to the same coast. Tamil is the everyday language, and French street signs still hang at the ends of the lanes.
Where is Union Territory of Puducherry?
Puducherry is not one place but four, scattered along India's coasts and stitched together only by their shared French past. The largest two sit on the Coromandel Coast in the south-east, facing the Bay of Bengal. Puducherry district holds the capital and covers about 293 square kilometres; Karaikal district lies further down the same shore across roughly 161 square kilometres.
Both are enclaves inside the surrounding state of Tamil Nadu, bordered by it on every landward side. Between them run some 150 kilometres of Tamil Nadu coast. The other two are far away and far smaller.
Yanam is a tiny enclave of about 20 square kilometres up the east coast, wrapped by Andhra Pradesh where the Godavari river nears the sea. Mahé is smaller still, some 9 square kilometres on the opposite side of the peninsula, set on the Malabar Coast and enclosed by Kerala. Reaching one from another means crossing whole Indian states.
No road links the four. Each keeps the borders France drew for it, and each is administered from the capital on the Bay of Bengal, a full peninsula apart from Mahé on the western sea.
What is Union Territory of Puducherry like?
The culture here is Tamil at its root, with a French layer laid over the top and never quite worn away. Tamil is the language of the streets, the temples, and daily life. Yet French survives in the names of the lanes, in a scatter of Franco-Tamil families, and in a lycée that still teaches it.
The split shows in the very plan of Puducherry city: the French Quarter east of the canal, laid out on a colonial grid of straight streets running down to the sea, and the older Tamil Quarter to its west, denser and built around its Hindu temples. Over that mix sits a third strand, spiritual and international. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in the city in 1926 by the philosopher Sri Aurobindo and his French collaborator known as the Mother, draws followers from across the world.
Their later project, the township of Auroville, was founded in 1968 as a place where people of every country might live together, gathered around the golden Matrimandir dome. Food carries the same crossing of worlds. Baguettes and Tamil rice-and-sambar share the same streets, and the cooking blends the two without apology.
What is the history of Union Territory of Puducherry?
François Martin turned a coastal fishing village into a French trading port in 1674, and Puducherry became the capital of France's Indian possessions. Over the following decades the French East India Company added the outposts of Mahé, Yanam, and Karaikal, each held onto through the wars that cost France almost everything else in India. That rule lasted 138 years.
Long after the British controlled the rest of the subcontinent, these four small enclaves stayed French, until they were transferred to India in 1954 and made a single Union Territory that still carries their old French borders.
What is the climate of Union Territory of Puducherry?
It stays warm and humid the year round on the Bay of Bengal. The heat builds through spring, peaking around May before the rains arrive. What sets this coast apart is when it gets its water: the northeast monsoon breaks in October and soaks the Coromandel shore into December, so the wet season lands late, unlike much of India.
The cooler, drier window from January into March is the kind stretch. That is when the Promenade fills.
How do you get to Union Territory of Puducherry?
Most travellers come down from Chennai. The city's own airport handles only a few domestic routes, so the usual arrival is Chennai International Airport, about 135 kilometres north, followed by the coastal East Coast Road along the Bay of Bengal. Trains run in from Chennai too, changing or terminating near the capital.
The three outlying districts sit far off on their own coasts, reached separately through the states that surround them.
