What is the history of Takasaki?
Takasaki began as a castle town of the roads. In 1600 a lord raised a castle here and named it Takasaki, and the town grew where the great highways met, the Nakasendō and the road to the north, so that traders, pilgrims, and porters passed through in streams. Faith settled on the hills nearby.
Monks at Shōrinzan carved and sold the round Daruma dolls that brought good luck, and shrines rose on Mount Haruna above the plain. The land held far older memory. Long before the castle, the Kōzuke country here raised great burial mounds and carved the stone stelae that record its ancient life, among the oldest writing in the land.
Then the railways came. In the modern age Takasaki became the great rail junction of the north, where the lines to the mountains and the snow country branched from the Tokyo road, and the city grew around the tracks. The old highways still cross the town.

Takasaki lies on the northwest edge of the Kantō plain in Gunma, central Japan. The city sits where the Karasu river leaves the mountains for the plain, below Mount Haruna and the ranges of the north, at a meeting of old roads. Green mountains rise to the west.

What is the climate of Takasaki?
Takasaki has a warm, humid continental climate. Hot summers and cold, dry winters cross the plain, and the dry north wind, the karakkaze, sweeps down from the mountains in winter, while the summers bring heat and thunder. Snow whitens the peaks in winter.

Takasaki lies in southern Gunma, northwest of Tokyo. Bullet trains and the expressway run to it from Tokyo in under an hour, and here the lines to Niigata and Nagano branch from the northern route, while roads climb into the mountains. Buses reach the mountain towns around.
