Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The mountain sets the alarm clock. Anyone using Gotemba as a starting point for the climb up Mount Fuji wants a bed close to the departure point and an early breakfast rather than a view, since the walking begins long before the shops open. Shoppers keep different hours.
A room near the outlets suits a slower trip, and the Fuji Motorsports Museum sits within the same kind of day out. Komakado Kazaana Cave makes a short detour from either base. Hakone is the third direction.
The Pola Museum of Art, the Lalique Museum, Hakone, the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum and the Hakone Meissen Antique Museum belong to that side, and a traveller planning two or three of them will get more out of a base chosen with them in mind than out of one chosen for the mountain. The Ashinoko Boat Cruise belongs there too. Gotemba itself stays the practical choice, which is the trade a visitor makes for being at the foot of the climb rather than among the galleries.
Fujisan Jukū no Mori and the Toshio Maruyama Memorial Museum round out what the city holds on its own account.

What is the history of Gotemba?
A castle came first. Fukasawa Castle is the oldest named site in Gotemba, from a period when a position on the southeastern flank of Mount Fuji mattered to whoever held the ground. The cave is older still.
Komakado Kazaana Cave belongs to the mountain rather than to any period of settlement, and it was there long before a castle or a city gave the place its names. The city itself dates from 1955. Gotemba was constituted then, taking in ground that already carried a climbing route up Mount Fuji, and the name is occasionally written Gotenba.
Shopping arrived much later. Premium outlet shopping turned the town into a destination for people with no intention of climbing anything, and the Fuji Motorsports Museum added a second modern reason to stop. Art came from the Hakone side.
The Pola Museum of Art, the Hakone Museum of Art and the Lalique Museum, Hakone gather collections that have nothing to do with the mountain, which is how a climbing town came to sit beside a run of galleries. Fujisan Jukū no Mori and the Toshio Maruyama Memorial Museum are the later, quieter additions to that list.
