What is the history of Kanuma?

1889 is the date on record. The official name that the record carries is Kanuma Town, and the ground it covers held people long before any of that, as the Negoyadai Site shows. Excavation runs deeper than administration.

Kanuma sits in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, and the museums gathered under its name hold what the ground and the centuries left behind. The Ōya History Museum is one of them. Later layers are legible too.

The Kanuma Saint Peter and Paul Orthodox church marks a strand of religious history distinct from anything else on the register, and former Awano Junior High School building preserves a school building from a period when the district still needed it. Kawakami Sumio has a municipal museum under that name. The seasons are distinct. Tochigi Prefecture puts Kanuma in the temperate band, which gives hot and humid summers, a cold winter, and two short shoulder seasons that carry most of the walking. The Negoyadai Site and Tochinoki Family Land are outdoor ground, so the calendar matters at both.

How do you get to Kanuma?

Roads do most of it. Kanuma is reached from within Tochigi Prefecture, and the size of the city means the Ōya History Museum, the Tochigi Prefectural Museum, and former Awano Junior High School building are separate trips rather than one afternoon. Tochinoki Family Land and the Negoyadai Site each need their own leg.

A car makes the difference between covering the Kanuma register in one day and covering half of it. Kanuma Town is the same destination.
