The first pile went down in the mid-1960s. Ommoord rose through the early 1970s as a planned expansion of Rotterdam onto the polder land north-east of the old city, laid out with high towers of eight, fourteen, and twenty floors ringed by lower housing. The towers rose in a hurry.
