Overschie, Rotterdam — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Overschie is a borough of Rotterdam grown from an old village where four Schie waterways meet.

About Overschie

Where to stay in Overschie

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Settle in Overschie beside the Schie. Most visitors who choose Overschie settle near the old village core around the Grote Kerk, where the Overschiese Dorpsstraat runs down to the Schie and the walk between café terraces and the church tower stays short. The airport edge suits a different traveller.

Rooms out toward Zestienhoven put Rotterdam The Hague Airport within a quick reach, trading the village hush for flight-side convenience and fast road links. Weigh quiet against speed, then pick your street.

About Overschie

What are the main landmarks in Overschie?

The Grote Kerk marks the old village heart. Its neo-Gothic tower rises beside the Schie on the Overschiese Dorpsstraat, replacing a medieval church lost to fire, and it still fixes the sightline that draws walkers off the main street. Start there.

From the church the eighteenth-century Baroque garden of the Tempel estate makes a short detour, while the runway of Rotterdam The Hague Airport out at Zestienhoven pulls a very different crowd across the borough. Two moods, one district.

What is the history of Overschie?

The village came before the city reached it. Overschie grew at the junction where the Delftse Schie, Schiedamse Schie, Delfshavense Schie and Rotterdamse Schie converge, and in 1340 Rotterdam won leave to dig its own branch out toward the settlement. The water shaped everything.

Overschie kept its own municipality for centuries before Rotterdam absorbed the village in 1941, folding the old core, the Grote Kerk and the Kleinpolder fields into the growing city. The name still records the Schie.

Where is Overschie?

Overschie sits along the Schie between central Rotterdam and the runway at Zestienhoven, split by the A13 motorway near the Kleinpolderplein interchange.
