About SchiebroekWhere to stay in Schiebroek
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Pick your street by mood. Visitors who want the tuinstad calm settle among the tree-lined singels off the Adrianalaan, where interwar houses line the Lindesingel and the walk to the Schiebroekse Park stays gentle and green. The Peppelweg suits a different stay.
Rooms near this long shopping street put daily errands, cafés and the Meijersplein metro within easy reach, trading garden hush for the quick run into central Rotterdam. Weigh quiet against convenience, then choose.
About Schiebroek
What are the main landmarks in Schiebroek?
The Peppelweg fixes the everyday heart. Built as one long parade in the middle of the last century and named for the poplar, it draws Schiebroek to its shops, while the older Kleiweg still traces the medieval land route that once linked the Rotte and the Schie. Water pulls the other way.
Out on the Ringdijk stands the gemaal that has drained the Schiebroekse Polder since 1914, and the Wilgenplas beyond it keeps its open-air swimming spot among the surrounding green. Two edges, one borough.
What is the history of Schiebroek?
The polder came before the houses. Schiebroek was drained as farmland in the 1770s and ran itself as a small independent municipality from 1817, a scatter of homes by the Kleiweg among fields and mill ditches. Then commuters arrived.
From 1920 developers laid out the tuinstad of tree-lined singels along the Adrianalaan and Wilgenlei, and in 1941 Rotterdam absorbed Schiebroek together with Hillegersberg and Overschie, folding the young garden suburb into the growing city. The name still records Schieland.
Where is Schiebroek?
Schiebroek is a reclaimed polder in northern Rotterdam between the Bergse Plassen lakes at Hillegersberg and the Overschie borough, with Rotterdam The Hague Airport at Zestienhoven along its northern edge.
