Zuidwijk is a designed landscape more than a monument district. Its set piece is the plan itself. Willem van Tijen shaped the layout as distinct sub-neighbourhoods, each ringed by garden courts, communal greens and low brick housing that steps back from the through roads.
In the Kampen pocket, Gerrit Rietveld drew low-rise and stacked row houses that still draw students of Dutch design. The Zuiderpark spreads along the northern edge.
What is the history of Zuidwijk?
Zuidwijk rose from open polder in the 1950s. The land was farmland before. It was among the first Dutch housing schemes built to the wijkgedachte, the neighbourhood-unit idea drawn from the American planner Clarence Perry, which split the quarter into self-contained sub-neighbourhoods around shared greens and schools.
Willem van Tijen led the plan, part of Rotterdam's post-war effort to house its people south of the river. Together with Pendrecht and Lombardijen, it became one of the Southern Garden Cities.
