What is the history of Vreewijk?
Vreewijk began as the first tuindorp in the Netherlands. The NV Eerste Rotterdamse Tuindorp was founded in 1913 to build homes for workers in the docks and shipyards of Rotterdam-Zuid, and construction started around 1916 on land south of the Nieuwe Maas. Two architects shaped it.
Hendrik Petrus Berlage laid out the western street plan, while Marinus Jan Granpré Molière planned the larger eastern part around De Brink. The garden village grew from that plan.
