This residential Spangen offers few beds. Spangen is a residential quarter, so most visitors sleep across the water in Delfshaven or nearer the centre and cross over the Mathenesserbrug on foot. The P.C.
Hooftplein anchors the calmest blocks. Match hours are the exception, when Sparta Rotterdam fills the streets around Het Kasteel.

What are the main landmarks in Spangen?
The brick does the talking. The Justus van Effencomplex, laid out by Michiel Brinkman around a central courtyard, carries raised galleries along its upper floors that architects from across Europe still visit and study as an early street in the sky. A short walk north stands the Sparta-Stadion Het Kasteel, opened in 1916 as the oldest football ground in the country.

What is the history of Spangen?
The land was polder first. Rotterdam drained it in 1909, and by 1917 the municipal housing office had drawn a master plan meant to give working households well-built homes on the reclaimed ground. Brick blocks followed.
The Justus van Effenstraat took shape as Michiel Brinkman's gallery courtyard, a design that carried Spangen's name into architecture schools far beyond Delfshaven.
Where is Spangen?
Spangen sits in western Rotterdam. Drained polder land inside a bend of the Delfshavense Schie, it is reached over the Mathenesserbrug and edged from Tussendijken by the Mathenesserweg. The ground is flat.
