What is the history of Świdnica?
Świdnica grew rich as the seat of a Silesian duchy. In the middle ages it was the capital of a Piast duchy of its own, walled and proud, and its brewers made a beer so good that towns across the north kept a Świdnica cellar to sell it. The duchy passed to the crown of Bohemia.
After its last dukes died out, Świdnica came under Bohemia, then the Habsburgs, and its wealth and walls made it a fortress fought over in many wars. Faith divided and marked the town. After the Thirty Years' War the Protestants were allowed just one church, built of wood and clay outside the walls, and they raised the vast Church of Peace that still stands.
Later the Prussians took Silesia. Świdnica became a great fortress of the Prussian kings, besieged again and again, until the walls came down and the town settled to quieter trades. The old churches still stand by the square. Świdnica keeps its Church of Peace and its cathedral in Silesia.

Świdnica lies in Lower Silesia, southwest Poland, below the Owl mountains of the Sudeten. The town sits on the Bystrzyca river where the plain meets the hills, in a green country of fields and orchards, south of Wrocław. Wooded ranges rise to the south.
