The district's own landmark is the Museum of the Orient, set in a former cod warehouse on the Doca de Alcântara. West along the riverfront, at the edge toward Belém, the Electricity Museum fills the old Tejo Power Station beside the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. To the east, the National Museum of Ancient Art holds Portugal's national collection.
North of the valley stands the Igreja da Memória, and the Museu da Marioneta lies nearby in Santos. Most sit near the docks.
What is the history of Alcântara?
Alcântara takes its name from the Arabic al-qantara, meaning the bridge. A crossing once spanned the stream. For centuries the area lay outside Lisbon's walls, a rural fringe of country estates and convents.
The nineteenth century turned it into one of the city's main industrial and port districts, its waterfront packed with docks, factories, and cod warehouses. The Tejo Power Station rose here to supply Lisbon's electricity, and it now serves as the Electricity Museum.
Where is Alcântara?
Alcântara fills the valley of the same name in western Lisbon, its lower end meeting the Tagus. The river marks its southern edge. Belém lies west along the riverfront, while Campo de Ourique and Estrela rise on the slopes to the north and east above the valley floor.
Santos adjoins it to the east, and the ground climbs toward Ajuda in the northwest.
