Benfica is a freguesia in the northwest of Lisbon, covering roughly 8 km² of the city's inland edge toward Amadora. The Luz area anchors its best-known corner, built around the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz and a cluster of sports pavilions. Its name travels far. A first-time visitor is better based closer to the Tagus. Benfica rewards the traveller who wants a calmer, mostly local corner and does not mind the distance out to Campo de Benfica.

The district's older sights are mostly religious. The Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz and the Convento de São Domingos de Benfica survive from its monastic centuries, joined by parish churches such as the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo. At Luz the two Pavilhão da Luz arenas serve the sports club, and the Monumento ao Colégio Militar recalls the officers' school of the same name.
Grander private houses remain as well, among them the Casa da antiga Quinta Grande and the Casa da Quinta do Assentista. Small monuments dot the streets, including Aos Pioneiros da Aviação.

Benfica began as farmland beyond the walls of Lisbon, a belt of country estates known as quintas. Houses like the Casa da antiga Quinta Grande and the Casa da Quinta do Assentista are what remains of that estate landscape. Religious orders settled here too, leaving the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz and the Convento de São Domingos de Benfica.
The city then swallowed the fields. What had been a rural parish became one of Lisbon's northwestern freguesias.

The freguesia sits at Lisbon's northwestern rim, its western boundary running against the neighbouring municipality of Amadora. Carnide lies to the north and São Domingos de Benfica to the east, so Benfica forms the city's last stretch of ground before Amadora. Campo de Benfica names its historic heart.
