The Jerónimos Monastery and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos anchor the district's monumental front. A chain of riverside museums follows: the National Coach Museum, the Navy Museum, and the National Archaeology Museum. Two houses show modern art.
They are the Berardo Collection Museum and the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. The former Tejo Power Station, converted into the Electricity Museum, stands on the same waterfront, with the Museum of the Orient and the Museu de Arte Popular nearby.
What is the history of Belém?
Belém grew up along the Tagus shore that launched Portugal's voyages of discovery. The Jerónimos Monastery rose here in the Manueline style, at the height of that expansion. Industry arrived later.
The Tejo Power Station fed the city's electricity grid from the riverfront for decades before it closed and reopened as the Electricity Museum. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos was raised on the shore to mark that age of exploration. Lisbon redrew its parishes in 2012, setting Belém's outline.
Where is Belém?
Belém occupies the western riverfront of Lisbon, where the Tagus estuary widens toward the Atlantic and the open sea. The river forms its southern edge. Alcântara lies just east, toward central Lisbon. Its boundaries fall inside the Distrito de Lisboa, covering roughly ten square kilometres at the city's western end.
