What are the main landmarks in Avenidas Novas?
The district's cultural weight sits on Avenida de Berna, where the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian share one garden campus. Further up Avenida da República, the red-brick Campo Pequeno Bullring stages concerts as well as bullfights. The modernist Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, one of the first of its style in the city, stands nearby.
Near Saldanha, the Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum keeps a painting and porcelain collection in a former villa. Most sit a short walk apart.
What is the history of Avenidas Novas?
The avenues that name the district were drawn up as Lisbon pushed north in the late 19th century, an expansion planned by the municipal engineer Ressano Garcia. Avenida da República and its cross-streets extended the city beyond Avenida da Liberdade, lined with the mansions and apartment blocks of a growing middle class. Campo Pequeno gained its brick bullring in that same wave of building.
The modern parish of Avenidas Novas took its present shape in 2012, when Lisbon merged several older parishes. Its bones remain Belle Époque.
Where is Avenidas Novas?
The parish sits north of central Lisbon, wedged between Santo António to the south and Alvalade to the north. Its spine is Avenida da República, which runs from Saldanha up to Campo Pequeno and Entrecampos. Avenida de Berna crosses the middle.
To the west, Praça de Espanha marks the boundary with São Domingos de Benfica, and Areeiro lies along the eastern side.
